Emergency Medical Technician - Basic

This course is designed to instruct a student to the level of Emergency Medical Technician-Basic, who serves as a vital link in the chain of the health care team. It is recognized that the majority of prehospital emergency medical care will be provided by the EMT-Basic. This includes all skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other specialized service.

  • 45 clinical hours
  • Salary Range $24,000 - $30,000
  • Curriculum:
    • Preparatory: Introduction to Emergency Medical Care, Well-Being of the EMT Basic, Medical/Legal and Ethical Issues, The Human Body, Baseline Vital Signs and SAMPLE History, Lifting and Moving Patients.
    • Airway: Anatomy and Physiology, Pulmonary Resuscitation, Use of Airways, Suction Equipment, Oxygen Delivery.
    • Patient Assessment: Scene Size-Up, Initial Assessment, focused History and Physical Exam, Detailed Physical Exam, On-Going Assessment, Communications, Documentation.
    • Medical/Behavioral Emergencies and Obstetrics/Gynecology: General Pharmacology, Respiratory Emergencies, Cardiovascular Emergencies, Diabetes/Altered Mental Status, Allergies, Poisoning/Overdose, Environmental Emergencies, Behavioral Emergencies, Obstetrics/Gynecology.
    • Trauma: Bleeding and Shock, Soft Tissue Injuries, Musculoskeletal Care, Injuries to the Head, Neck and Spine.
    • Infants and Children: Developmental and Anatomical Differences.
    • Operations: Emergency Vehicle Operations, Transferring Patients, Rescue Operations

Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic

Paramedics have fulfilled prescribed requirements by a credentialing agency to practice the art and science of out-of-hospital medicine in conjunction with medical direction. Through performance of assessments and providing medical care, their goal is to prevent and reduce mortality and morbidity due to illness and injury. Paramedics primarily provide care to emergency patients in an out-of-hospital setting.

  • 450 classroom hours
  • 500 clinical hours
  • Salary Range $36,000 - $40,000
  • Curriculum:
    • Preparatory: EMS Systems, Roles and Responsibilities of the Paramedic, Well-Being of the Paramedic, Illness and Injury Prevention, Medical-Legal Issues, Ethics, General Principles of Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Venous Access and Medication Administration, Therapeutic Communications, Life Span Development.
    • Airway Management and Ventilation
    • Medical: Pulmonary, Cardiology, Neurology, Endocrinology, Allergies and anaphylaxis, Gastroenterology, Renal/Urology, Toxicology, Hematology, Environmental Conditions, Infectious and Communicable Diseases, Behavioral and Psychiatric Disorders, Gynecology, Obstetrics.
    • Patient Assessment: History Taking, Techniques of Physical Exam, Patient Assessment, Clinical Decision Making, Communications, Documentation.
    • Trauma: Trauma Systems, Mechanism of Injury, Hemorrhage and Shock, Soft Tissue Trauma, Burns, Head and Facial Trauma, Spinal Trauma, Thoracic Trauma, Abdominal Trauma, Musculoskeletal Trauma.
    • Special Considerations: Neonatology, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Abuse and Neglect, Patients with Special Challenges, Acute Interventions for the Chronic Care Patient.
    • Operations: Ambulance Operations, Medical Incident Command, Rescue Awareness and Operations, Hazardous Materials Incidents, Crime Scene Awareness.
