LHS students receive Meritory Service award

Two Lafayette High School students were honored today by Acadian Ambulance officials after performing CPR and resuscitation techniques on a man that went into cardiac arrest nearly a month ago.

Sarah Decuir and Camille Vincent, both 17-year-old seniors in the Academy of Health Careers, were at a Lafayette High football game on Nov. 17 when they noticed a man sitting in the stands who suddenly collapsed unconscious. After custodians screamed for help, both Sarah and Camille sprang into action and performed CPR on the man until medics with Acadian Ambulance arrived.

“It is the ultimate good of this program for our students to be able to perform services like the one they performed on Nov. 17,” said Stacey Thibodeaux, director of the Academy of Health Careers. “We’re teaching them life skills to make the world a better place.”

The two students were given the Meritory Service Award, an honor usually bestowed only upon employees, said Roy Payne of Acadian Ambulance.

Both Sarah and Camille said they were proud to receive their awards and said that they merely responded to the situation without any forethought, doing what they were trained by their teachers to do.

“I really didn’t feel anything,” Sarah said. “I didn’t feel anything. I really don’t how to explain it. I just performed CPR and that was it.”
