A core mission of the National EMS Academy is to provide quality educational programs that allow individuals to begin or enhance their career in emergency medical services. The EMT and paramedic programs at NEMSA meet or exceed all state and national standards for education programs.

Additionally, the paramedic program is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Students enjoy the benefits of an academically rigorous program of study, access to simulation laboratories to develop skills and hands-on clinical experience at local hospitals and with Acadian Ambulance, a nationally recognized leader in the ambulance industry.

Our partnership with the South Louisiana Community College gives students the flexibility to exit the program with a certificate of technical competency, and the option of completing studies for an Associate of Science Degree in Emergency Medical Technology-Paramedic.

Note: As of Fall 2012, SLCC is requiring all students to apply online. Start your online application now!

Students completing a NEMSA training program are eligible to sit for the National Registry of EMT’s (NREMT) certification examination. Our pass rate on the national examination exceeds the national average as published by the NREMT.

EMT-Basic is the entry-level position in the emergency medical services field. In just a few months, you can learn the skills you will need to work as part of a medical response team. EMTs provide basic emergency medical care and transportation to patients who access the EMS system. Medics make a difference...every day. A few of the skills you will learn:
    • Opening the airway and providing artificial ventilation
    • Delivery of semi-automated defibrillation
    • Controlling severe bleeding
    • Dressing and bandaging wounds
    • Splinting injured extremities
    • Delivery and care of infants
    • Emergency vehicle operations
    • Communications and medical record keeping
Entry Requirements: In order to enroll in our EMT program, a student must have a high school diploma or GED, be at least 18 years old before the date of the certification exam, demonstrate a minimum standard of reading aptitude, and be physically able to perform the duties of an EMT. Successful completion of a CPR certification program at the healthcare provider level is required before classes start.

EMT-Paramedics are health care professionals providing the highest level of care available outside of a hospital. Paramedics work under the supervision of a physician through written protocols or online guidance to extend advanced life support care to the sick and injured. Paramedics are trained in all aspects of pre-hospital emergency care. During a medical transport, the paramedic is responsible for the saf
ety and well-being of the patient. Paramedics may work on ambulances, in industrial settings, and on aeromedical transport teams. In addition to the skills possessed by EMT-Basics, paramedics also:
    • Start intravenous lines
    • Administer a wide variety of medications
    • Insert advanced airway devices
    • Read electrocardiograms
    • Use manual defibrillators and cardiac pacemakers
    • Other advanced skills delegated by the medical control physician
